Microsoft Simplified Chinese voice is included with all editions of MDBG Chinese Reader. It's compact and plays locally--no web connection is required. Higher-quality voices (HuiHui and HanHan) are available on Professional and Standard Editions, but a web connection is required. Third-party voices that support SAPI standards are also supported on the Professional and Standard Editions. For example Microsoft Lili, including with Windows 7/Vista Ultimate Editions, is a supported SAPI voice.
For those who need the higher quality voices without a web connection, Premium voices is a good option. By integrating a localized Microsoft Speech Server, Chinese Reader can support both Microsoft HuiHui and HanHan voices. HuiHui was characterized from a native Beijing speaker. HanHan was modeled after a speaker from Taiwan.
